چکیده

INTRODUCTION Infant botulism is a rare, probably underdiagnosed, life-threatening disease caused by the toxin-producing bacterium Clostridium botulinum. METHODS We investigated reported cases of infant botulism in Denmark from 1995 to 2015, and compared the incidence with that of other western countries. RESULTS We found nine cases of infant botulism in Denmark from 1995 to 2015. The incidence of infant botulism in Denmark was similar to that seen in other western countries, but likely underestimated. The source of infection was only confirmed in a single case. Four cases received botulism immune globulin, intravenous (BIG-IV), which was administered within 7-10 days from admission. CONCLUSIONS Infant botulism is probably underdiagnosed. Increased awareness is crucial to be able to recognise the condition. The time delay from hospital admission to administration of BIG-IV is challenging. Studies have shown that BIG-IV reduces both mean duration of intensive care and mean length of hospital stay; however, this was not confirmed in our work due to the limited number of patients. FUNDING none. TRIAL REGISTRATION not relevant.

First report of an infant botulism case due to Clostridium botulinum type Af.

Most infant botulism cases worldwide are due to botulinum toxin types A and B. Rarely, Clostridium botulinum strains that produce two serotypes (Ab, Ba, and Bf) have also been isolated from infant botulism cases. This is the first reported case of infant botulism due to C. botulinum type Af worldwide.

Abnormal Neuroimaging in a Case of Infant Botulism

We present the first case of abnormal neuroimaging in a case of infant botulism. The clinical findings of the patient with constipation, bulbar weakness, and descending, symmetric motor weakness are consistent with the classic findings of infant botulism. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), however, revealed restricted diffusion in the brain and enhancement of the cervical nerve roots. Traditiona...

Characterizing the fecal microbiota of infants with botulism

BACKGROUND Infant botulism is the most prevalent form of botulism in the USA, representing 68.5 % of cases reported from 2001-2012. Infant botulism results when botulinum toxin-producing clostridia (BTPC) colonize the infant gut with concomitant in vivo production of the highly potent botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). The gut microbiota of infants with botulism is largely uncharacterized; therefore,...

Characterization of Clostridium botulinum spores and its toxin in honey

Botulism is a serious paralytic disease caused by Clostridium botulinum toxin in foods. There are seven recognized serotypes of botulinum neurotoxins among which the principal prevalent types in humans include A, B and E. Infant botulism results from intestinal colonization and toxin production by C. botulinum spores in babies less than 1 year old. Honey is the most important food discriminated...

Infant Botulism Caused by Clostridium baratii Type F — Iowa, 2013

In June 2013, a male newborn aged 9 days (delivered after a full-term pregnancy) was brought to a hospital emergency department with a 2-day history of constipation, fussiness, and poor feeding. The mother reported her son's symptoms as excessive crying, reluctance to suck, and difficulty in swallowing milk. Within hours of arrival, the infant became less responsive and "floppy," and was intuba...
